6. What is a theme? What is a plug-in? How can I install, customize and manage them?
A theme is a set of files used to define both the look and feel of a WordPress website.
The theme essentially sits above or on top of the WordPress core files, tapping into their functionality to display both the front end of the website and often, certain theme-specific-functionality within the back end.
For the themes, you can check them by going to Appearance > Themes. You will see this page, where free default themes are already installed.
If you want to change your theme to premium, you can just click the “Add New” at the top and you will see a variety of available premium themes.
It will look like this:
They are suggested themes for WordPress, you can always look outside WordPress for themes.
For example, Divi by Elegant Themes are more up to date and popular these days because it’s compatibility with all devices such as Computer Desktop, Laptop, tabs and mobile phones. This is very important because most of the people nowadays do not only use computer desktop but also mobile phones.
Below is the link to Divi Theme to know more about it. If you need help customizing it, just let us know.
Now let’s continue by starting on the variety of plug-ins you can choose.
On the left-hand side of the page, you will find “Plug-in”.
WordPress have already installed few plug-ins.
They are the following:
- Hello Dolly
- Jetpack by WordPress.com
- MOJO Marketplace
- OptinMonster API
Activate the plug-in you think you need for your site, we suggest that you activate Jetpack as it is very useful for most websites.
(You need to connect it to a WordPress.com account, let us know if you need some help, we can do it for you.)
I recommend installing the plug-ins below, you can see them by clicking the Add New button on the top left corner of the page.
I have some more plug ins to recommend but for now, you just need these three plus the Jetpack which has already been installed by Hostgator.
